The hype for the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek set increases, and Nerdist is lucky enough to have a preview of more of the cards landing in our local game stores on November 13. This release, celebrating the 60th anniversary of Star Trek, has cards harkening back to famous moments, episodes, characters, settings, ships, and of course artifacts from sixty years of space-faring alien diplomacy. Every Star Trek series will get its own Magic: The Gathering cards, though from what we’ve seen so far, it looks like Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation will win out with the most representation. Our previews today are primarily from the two series, in fact. Let’s start out hot with one of the Trek fandom’s favorite memes: Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.

Dathon, His Heart Open—and his excellent LCARS (The Next Generation’s Library Computer and Retrieval System) variants—make me want to create a Temur Enchantment deck REAL bad. This is made all the more tempting by the many Saga cards appearing in this set, with each Saga representing a Star Trek episode from one of the series.
In the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Darmok,” Tamarian officer Dathon struggles to communicate with Picard, as his species speaks only in metaphor. He repeats “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra,” a historical Tamarian reference that flies above our beloved captain’s shiny bald head. Dathon maybe, possibly kidnapped him and brought him to the planet El-Adrel. But only for the purpose of establishing cross-species communication! Through time spent together, Picard eventually starts to understand what Dathon means, and when Dathon falls in battle with an electromagnetic being that the pair took on, their crossing paths are immortalized in a new metaphor: “Dathon and Picard at El-Adrel.”

Six other new cards come with the Dathon reveal, three of which are pictured above. The tricorder is in fine form, allowing for a little counter boost for the creature of your choice and the ability to surveil. The perfect friend for any away mission. Also, shoutout to the artist for drawing Moopsy here, the deceptively adorable, bone-eating, Pokémon-esque monstrosity from Star Trek: Lower Decks. Next is the F-Class Shuttlecraft, another artifact card. This mana rock also makes good use of Edge of Eternities‘ Station mechanic. In the spirit of Hare Apparent and Gathering Throng, Andromedan Automatons (from the Star Trek: The Original Series episode I, Mudd) allows you to tutor out other copies of the card. I’m sure there’s no shortage of devastating strategies to be built around that.

Starfleet Spanner Jockey is a simple but solid card, likely the most useful in a mono-blue or Izzet deck where you’re consistently tossing around non-creature spells each turn. Suus Mahna Practitioner (a reference to the Vulcan martial art that produced the Vulcan nerve pinch) is another card that uses the set’s fresh Strange New Worlds mechanic, which operates based on how many land cards with different names you have out on the battlefield.
In this case, each individually-named land card you have will lower the cost of this creature’s tap ability by one mana cost. Given this is a tap-to-tap ability, it could definitely come in handy, especially with the reasonable mana cost of the card itself. We round out this handful of new cards with Genesis Effect, a la Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock. This red instant allows you to deal six damage to target creature. It’s also used to destroy one of your own lands, but said land will be replaced by a New Planet token that you can tap for one mana of any color. Starburst decks in particular will benefit from having this card in the mix.
With each new card drop, we here at Nerdist get more and more excited for the set’s official release date, and chances are, the Trek fandom is feeling the exact same way. We can’t wait to see what other strange new cards are on the horizon for Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek Universes Beyond.
