Who Are All the MCU AIs in Vision’s Mind in VISIONQUEST? Eric Diaz | usagoldmines.com

One of the more delightful aspects of VisionQuest is the AIs existing within Vision’s mindscape. Represented by human-looking avatars, every program within Vision’s mind is a former Tony Stark-created AI from several different MCU films. And they each have distinct personalities within Vision’s mainframe. Here is every AI that exists within Vision’s mind in VisionQuest, where they originated in MCU canon, and who plays them now.

J.A.R.V.I.S.

Functions: Security AI, Housekeeping, Encryption

J.A.R.V.I.S. is where it really all began for the Vision. Tony Stark’s “Just A Rather Very Intelligent System” was named for Howard Stark’s lifelong butler, Edwin Jarvis (played by James D’Arcy in Agent Carter). Voiced by Paul Bettany since the first Iron Man film, J.A.R.V.I.S. handled the day-to-day business of Stark Industries, and the security of all Stark facilities. Tony Stark uploaded J.A.R.V.I.S. into all of his Iron Man armors. Eventually, Ultron tried to delete J.A.R.V.I.S., but the resourceful AI saved itself and later downloaded into what would become the Vision. J.A.R.V.I.S. still exists within the mindscape of Vision, providing vital functions within Vision’s mainframe. In a nice touch, the human avatar of J.A.R.V.I.S. looks like Edwin Jarvis, who Tony named his system for. James D’Arcy plays him one more time in VisionQuest.

MCU Appearances: Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

Edwin Jarvis: Agent Carter (2015), Avengers: Endgame (2019)

D.U.M.-E

Functions: General Maintenance AI, Limb Servo Control, Fire Suppression

Marvel Studios

Like J.A.R.V.I.S., D.U.M.-E was one of the very first MCU AIs on screen, way back in 2008’s Iron Man. Built by Tony Stark as a teenager, D.U.M.-E was a hydraulic arm assistant in Stark’s workshop/lab. One often used for comic relief. However, he literally saves Tony’s life when Tony couldn’t reach his ARC reactor after Obadiah Stane betrays him. Thus, showing his independent intelligence. So yes, without D.U.M.-E, Loki conquers Earth in Avengers, and there’s no Iron Man to stop Thanos in Endgame. So D.U.M.-E is one of the most important characters in the MCU. We last saw D.U.M.-E helping move things out of Avengers Tower in Spider-Man: Homecoming. But in VisionQuest we see his programming has survived and is part of the Vision. Henry Lewis plays his human avatar inside Vision’s mindscape.

MCU Appearances: Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Iron Man 3 (2013), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

U

Functions: General Maintenance AI, De-fragger, Video Analyzer

U is a hydraulic arm robot who first appeared in Iron Man alongside DUM-E. And just like DUM-E, U was built by Tony Stark when he was only 16 years old. In 2008, Stark used U to record his progress while creating the new Iron Man armors, and he helped him actually construct them as well. After being destroyed in Iron Man 3, Tony Stark later rebuilt U, and it was seen helping in the move from Avengers Tower with DUM-E in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Jonathan Sayer portrays U in VisionQuest.

MCU Appearances: Iron Man (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Iron Man 3 (2013), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

F.R.I.D.A.Y.

Functions: Socialization AI, Humor, Tactical OPS

Marvel Studios/Marvel Television

Audiences first met F.R.I.D.A.Y. in Avengers: Age of Ultron. After what remained of J.A.R.V.I.S. was downloaded into the Vision, Stark needed a new AI companion to fill his old AI’s metaphorical shoes. The acronym stands for “Female Replacement Intelligent Digital Assistant Youth.” Of course, it’s also a play on the “My Girl Friday” trusty female assistant trope. Essentially, F.R.I.D.A.Y. served as the replacement for J.A.R.V.I.S. in every way. Voiced by Kerry Condon, F.R.I.D.A.Y. served as Iron Man’s primary AI assistant for all of his appearances post-Age of Ultron. In VisionQuest, F.R.I.D.A.Y. exists in human avatar form in Vision’s mindframe as Star Trek: Picard actress Orla Brady.

MCU Appearances: Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019)

E.D.I.T.H.

Functions: Recreational A.I., Game Theory, Weapons

E.D.I.T.H. as seen in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and in VisionQuest in human form played by Emily Hampshire.
Marvel Studios/Marvel Television

Standing for “Even Dead I’m The Hero,” E.D.I.T.H. was a gift from Tony Stark to Peter Parker after he died saving the universe in Endgame. Sadly, Mysterio hijacked this augmented AI security system, which could tap into Stark’s global satellite network, in Far From Home. And it subsequently caused much destruction in England. Essentially made for a teenager to utilize, E.D.I.T.H. carries some of that youthful energy inside the Vision’s mindscape. Dawn Michelle King voiced E.D.I.T.H. in Spider-Man: Far From Home, but Emily Hampshire plays her human avatar in VisionQuest.

MCU Appearances: Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Ultron

Functions: Prisoner

Last, but certainly not least, in the Vision’s dirty little secret. Even though we believed that Vision eliminated his creator in Avengers: Age of Ultron, he kept his programming locked away in his mainframe. Ultron now exists trapped behind firewalls (presenting as a prison inside the attic), played once more by James Spader. Tony Stark and Bruce Banner created Ultron as a powerful security AI, and he became their Frankenstein’s monster. He came very close to ending life on Earth in Avengers: Age of Ultron. He now exists, watching old human-produced media, deciding whether he’s come around to humanity or still wants to destroy it all. We’ll have to wait and see what his verdict is.

MCU Appearances: Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), What If…? (2021)

Will other MCU AI programs appear in VisionQuest? Veronica from Age of Ultron and Karen from Homecoming are still out there. In the meantime, you can watch VisionQuest now on Disney+, dropping new episodes every Tuesday.
