Disney+ has revealed Marvel’s official Avengers: Doomsday watchlist of 15 shows and movies and the collection has one obvious omission, The Marvels. The 2023 film introduced the X-Men universe to the MCU, and considering those iconic mutants and their world will play a big role in the fight against Doom it seems absurd The Marvels isn’t a must-rewatch for the crossover event. Why would Marvel Studios deem it unworthy of a revisit ahead of Doomsday? The next Avengers film might be planning to ignore Monica’s multiverse plight entirely. But considering what other movies didn’t make the cut either, this exclusion might not be what it seems.
How Did The Marvels Introduce the X-Men to the MCU?
In The Marvels, Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau (a.k.a. Photon) sacrificed herself to stop an incursion and got herself stuck in a parallel world. In a mid-credits scene we learned which part of the multiverse she ended up in. Rambeau woke up in a hospital bed to find a variant of her late mother Maria Rambeau played once again by Lashana Lynch. In that timeline, Maria not only lived, she became Binary, a Carol Danvers persona from Marvel Comics. It was the second living Maria variant we saw. Another super-powered version of the character appeared in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness as that dimension’s Captain Marvel.
It wasn’t until another superhero entered Monica’s hospital room that we learned what made this dimension so important. Her physician was Kelsey Grammer’s Dr. Hank McCoy, the Fox X-Men cinematic universe’s original Beast.
Grammer’s Beast wasn’t the first mutant to appear in the MCU. That was Kamala Khan. Nor was he even the first Fox-era actor to reprise his X-Men role in the MCU. Patrick Stewart played a Professor X variant as part of the Illuminati in Multiverse of Madness. But Beast was the first to appear in the MCU in his own dimension. Or at least that’s what we thought.
Did Monica Rambeau Really End Up in the Fox X-Men Universe?
The Marvels did not confirm that Monica ended up on the Fox X-Men Universe. No future MCU entry has either. Technically, all we have ever known is that she ended up in a dimension where mutants exist. But while Grammer’s Beast did look a little different from previous appearances, there was reason to think that scene took place on Earth-10005, the designation for the Fox X-Men universe. The end-credits scene used music from both X2 and Days of Future Past. That was a noticeable difference from the musical cue we got previously for Kamala Khan’s mutant revelation and Charles Xavier’s Illuminati scene. Both employed the X-Men: The Animated Series theme.
Whatever the intention of Beast’s cameo, the music Marvel used, or the implication of the scene was in 2023, the inherent ambiguity of the moment means Marvel can do whatever it wants in Avengers: Doomsday. And that includes ignoring it entirely.
Will Avengers: Doomsday Ignore The Marvels‘s End Credits Entirely?
Teyonah Parris recently said she is not part of Avengers: Doomsday‘s gigantic cast. Neither is Lashana Lynch, who has appeared in three different dimensions as three different variants of Maria Rambeau. As of now Iman Vellani isn’t starring in the movie, but it certainly is interesting she is hosting Marvel’s Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday Official Podcast. Hmm…..
Even more interesting is that while Brie Larson isn’t in the cast, either, Doctor Doom’s armor bears Captain Marvel’s insignia.
One person who is confirmed to appear is Grammer. We haven’t seen him in a trailer yet (also noteworthy!), but he’ll return as Beast in Doomsday, but if Parris and Lynch do not appear it seems unlikely the movie will address his The Marvels‘ end-credits scene. In that case it will all but confirm Monica ended up in totally different dimension with a Beast variant where Mutants exist rather than Earth-10005 specifically. That might seem like a retcon, but technically it won’t be since the franchise never confirmed that’s where Monica went. In that case the scene will simply serve as an introduction to the idea there are timelines where X-Men and Avengers co-exist.
Why Would the MCU Ignore The Marvels in Avengers: Doomsday?
The Marvels was not a critical darling or a box office smash. Since Avengers: Doomsday will feature multiple teams of heroes from multiple dimensions, including numerous stars from an entirely different cinematic universe made by an entirely different studio, Marvel might have decided The Marvels and much of its cast was an easy and obvious cut despite the seeming importance of its mid-credits scene to a multiversal war storyline, even though that seems impossible to us. We consider it one of the seven most important MCU entries to understanding what will happen in Doomsday.
But there are two other movies that definitely were hits that are also conspicuously missing from the Disney+ Doomsday watchlist. And taken together with The Marvels their collective exclusion is reason to believe we will see Monica Rambeau later this year.
Why Didn’t Disney Include Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past in Its Doomsday Watchlist?
Disney recently confirmed Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will reprise their superhero roles as Wade Wilson and Logan in Avengers: Doomsday. Their big multiverse-traversing film, Deadpool & Wolverine, is also on the Disney+ Doomsday Watchlist. But somehow Deadpool 2 is not, despite that film also featuring the Merc With a Mouth skipping across both time and the multiverse. And it seems even more bizarre that X-Men: Days of Future Past isn’t worth a revisit considering that excellent film saw Stewart’s Charles Xavier and Ian McKellan’s Magneto relying on time travel to save their world from complete destruction, something they’ll both be doing in Doomsday.
The trailers for Avengers: Doomsday are also playing up the idea that Doom’s enemies have done something they shouldn’t and must now answer for. In promos, we hear Robert Downey Jr.’s villain say, “All of you have lived stolen lives. And now you must give them back.” Deadpool should have died in Deadpool 2 and only survived because of Cable’s Time-Travel Device, which Wade then stole and adapted to also travel back through the multiverse. Every mutant from Earth-10005 who will appear in Doomsday should also be dead. They’re only alive because Logan was sent back in time to save their world and themselves.
They are all living stolen lives, just as the Avengers of Earth-616 who only exist both because of the Time Heist and because Monica Rambeau stopped an incursion from destroying their dimension. And considering what Doomsday‘s villain has already told us, it’s hard to believe he doesn’t care about any of that.
Could Monica Rambeau Make a Surprise Appearance in Avengers: Doomsday?
Tony Stark said that when you mess with time it tends to mess back. Now his powerful variant is ready to wage war on the entire multiverse to keep his own universe safe. Victor von Doom believes the greatest threat to his world are people who shouldn’t be alive. He wants to eliminate those who only survived by cheating time itself, because in doing so they put all worlds at risk.
It’s hard to believe he won’t care about Monica Rambeau. She saved a world full of death-cheating Avengers and ended up in another world full of X-Men also living stolen lives. And that might be why Marvel didn’t include The Marvels, Deadpool 2, or X-Men: Days of Future Past. They might matter so much for this story the MCU doesn’t want to tip its hand by highlighting them on a list full of films that don’t seem very important to rewatch.
That makes sense. And not just because we know the movie will have some surprises, same as The Marvels did. That movie didn’t even tell Parris about Beast’s surprise cameo and she was in the scene. Doom can’t give up all of his secrets before we see his plan unfold.
When it does we might see Monica Rambeau.
