September 9th marked the pre-sales Kickstarter launch for Street Fighter: The Official Movie Graphic Novel. The graphic novel is an anthology of five original prequel stories set in the world of Legendary and Paramount’s upcoming Street Fighter film, set to release only in theaters on October 16th. David Dastmalchian (Murderbot, One Piece), who stars as M. Bison in the movie, has also penned the character’s backstory in the Street Fighter graphic novel.
There’s also a lot more to explore in this Street Fighter graphic novel anthology. One story, written by Paul Salamoff and illustrated by Christopher Jones, will focus on Ken and Ryu training under Gouken at the temple, exploring how their friendship developed—and their rivalry. Another story in the anthology, written by Amy Chu and illustrated by Claudia Balboni, chronicles Chun-Li’s rebellious teenage years. It looks like we’ll be learning much more about her background, her relationship with her father, and details of her training. We’ll also see how she first came across Shadaloo, the Big Bad Company of all Street Fighter ‘verses. Writer Nick Marino teams up with artist Robert Ingranata for an unexpected story about Guile and Dhalsim. The two meet at a martial arts competition, and end up working together to foil the plans of—you guessed it, Shadaloo—and also, y’know, avoid dying. I’m very interested to see how this dynamic plays out on the page!
Writer Brian Buccelatto and artist Mattia Monaco bring us a tale of pink fan-favorite/running joke Dan Hibiki. In this Street Fighter graphic novel, we’ll be getting the origin of the man who has never backed down from a fight—even when he really, really should have. Rounding out the anthology is David Dastmalchian’s exploration of the past circumstances that made M. Bison the power-hungry monster he is today. Dastmalchian hasn’t been paired with an artist just yet, so we’ll have to wait and see who will be bringing his words to life.
