Mike McFarland has been a ubiquitous and treasured voice talent for thirty-six years. On September 9, 2026, his longtime friend and Dragonball co-star Tiffany Volmer reported his death on Facebook. McFarland underwent surgery in January of 2025 to remove a brain tumor. Doctors discovered it when he’d gone in for what he thought was an inner-ear infection. Later, in August of 2025, McFarland was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, an aggressive, fast-moving brain cancer that starts from a growth of malignant cells in the brain or spinal cord. After a year of battling the disease both at home and in a skilled nursing facility, it eventually took his life.
Before his death, McFarland lent his voice to just about every anime goliath of the past thirty years. McFarland’s voice acting can be found in Attack on Titan, Dragonball Z, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Lupin III, Tokyo Ghoul, Black Clover, Ouran High School Host Club, Initial D, My Hero Academia, and dozens and dozens more. Many of his friends, creative collaborators, and fans have come out since his death to mourn the legendary VA’s passing. CrunchyRoll also issued a statement to TMZ regarding the loss of Mike McFarland:
Mike brought so much to all of us who knew him, and to all of the anime fans who knew his work. He was an incredible talent, a good friend to so many of us, and will be sorely, sorely missed.
Maybe you know Mike McFarland best as Dragonball Z‘s Master Roshi and Yajirobe. Maybe you first heard his voice as Buggy the Clown in One Piece. Maybe you’ll never forget his performance as Jean Kirstein in Attack on Titan. I initially encountered him as Komada and Butajiri in Yu Yu Hakusho. I invite every anime fan to look through Mike McFarland’s IMDb page. Even if you think you think you knew the actor, it will likely stun you just how many characters you know were brought to life by McFarland’s expert voice acting. Suffice it to say, he will never be forgotten.
