If you’ve lived under a rock in 2026, you might not have heard that a YouTuber directed one of the biggest movies of the year. No, not Kane Parsons with Backrooms, though he did and it was. But the other YouTuber who became a big-time horror director. Curry Barker’s Obsession made a shit-zillion dollars on a miniscule budget and gave nightmares and contributed to discourse for a whole generation. He’s got several more big theatrical movies lined up, but that doesn’t mean he’s too big to go back to making YouTube shorts. Barker just uploaded a new horror, Mama Bear, to his channel that’s a bad idea. Take a look below. NSFW for violence and language.
Barker and his collaborators have made several horror and comedy shorts (often blurring the line between the two) on the YouTube channel. He and frequent cohort Cooper Tomlinson even made the arguably just as scary found footage film Milk & Serial. But a lot of his shorter-shorts utilize the uncanny and surreal in troubling ways.
Now, I can’t say I fully understand everything going on in Mama Bear, a supremely stressful five-minutes. It seems like our boy Floyd has a doppelganger who did some real bad stuff and Lacy’s not happy about it. In addition, it’s got some Barker hallmarks. Himself playing someone on the other end of a phone call, a creepy person standing in shadows in a corner, that moves in abnormal ways. And of course we have sudden unexpected violence.
Doppelgangers are real, real scary, and it looks like this one ate somebody?! Or who even knows. But possibly even more frightening is people you know and trust thinking you did something bad enough that you should die immediately because of it. No thank you. At any rate, while not as scary as some of Barker’s longer short films, Mama Bear is a nice little reminder that horror on YouTube is incredibly viable and chilling as all hell.
