Tom Cruise found both critical and box office success with Top Gun: Maverick. Now he wants to see if he can capture legacy sequel lightning once again. Only this time he won’t be traveling on the highway to the danger zone. He’s racing back to theaters with Days of Thunder 2, and this time his spin around a NASCAR track will bring Anne Hathaway along for the fun.
Cruise and a cowboy-hat-wearing Hathaway shared a video on social media announcing The Odyssey star has joined the cast of the recently greenlit Days of Thunder 2. (Though that’s not its official name.) The film will reach the starting line on June 2, 2028. That might seem far away because it is. As the two Hollywood megastars pointed out in their announcement, they can’t start filming until after the pregnant Hathaway has her baby. After that it will be time for them to be on their mark.
Yes, we just pulled off an acting/racing pun.
As Deadline notes, Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies, 50/50) will direct. Will Staples (Without Remorse) is writing the script. The late Tony Scott directed the original 1990 film which introduced Cruise’s fiery young stock car racer Cole Trickle to audiences. This time around he’ll be the much older grizzled vet. As for Hathaway, she’s expected to play a team owner who is also an engineer.
Days of Thunder also starred the late Robert Duvall and Nicole Kidman. It won’t surprise us if Michael Rooker or Cary Elwes reprise their roles from the original.
Could Days of Thunder 2 capture some of that Top Gun: Maverick magic? Maybe, but the original is not the beloved classic that Cruise’s fighter pilot film was. And it will also release in the shadow of the fantastic F1: The Movie, which also featured Brad Pitt as an older race car driver.
We won’t bet against this film being a winner, though. With Cruise and Hathaway as its stars, Days of Thunder 2 already feels like it has a head start.
