The early 2000s were quite the time for dystopian book series. First with Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games in 2008, followed by James Dashner’s The Maze Runner in 2009, and finally with Veronica Roth’s Divergent series in 2011. The holy trinity of dystopian series. Each one went on to land its own film franchise. Thirteen years after the final installment of the Divergent trilogy was published, Veronica Roth is returning to her roots. The author announced over the weekend that she’s written two new spin-off books to accompany the series. The companion duology is set in an alternate universe in which Tris, the series’ heroine, didn’t choose Dauntless.

Roth made the major announcement on Saturday, April 18 at BookCon in New York City. She explains that the duology takes on a new perspective, giving a fresh take on the original story.
“Not a prequel, not a sequel, not a spinoff, not a different POV but an alternate universe of Divergent where Tris chooses a different faction,” Roth told USA Today. “I think the question of ‘who is Tris without Dauntless’ is an interesting one.”
The Divergent series—Divergent (2011), Insurgent (2012) and Allegiant (2013)—takes place in dystopian Chicago. To maintain balance, society is split into five factions: Abnegation (selfless), Erudite (intellectual), Dauntless (brave), Candor (honest) and Amity (peaceful). In the original books, Beatrice “Tris” Prior discovers that she is Divergent, meaning she doesn’t just belong to one faction. In this dystopian society, those who are Divergent are hunted and killed. At the Choosing Ceremony, Tris chooses Dauntless to conceal her identity as a war brews.
What Will the New Books be About?
The newest installment of the Divergent series is called The Sixth Faction. According to Roth, it will answer the question of “what would happen if Tris never chose Dauntless?” Instead, her decision thrusts her into an underground rebellion. There, she meets a boy named Tobias “Four” Eaton, who is her love interest in the original books.

“For existing fans, I’m excited for them to see how the old and the new fold together,” Roth teased. “You’d think that certain things wouldn’t happen because she makes a different faction choice, but she does find her way to the same people. Seeing how that happens is a really fun part of it.”
In 2014, Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment adapted the series into a film franchise. Shailene Woodley starred as Tris in the adaptations, which, let’s be honest, weren’t great. They weren’t the worst, but they certainly weren’t the best. As of 2026, it has been thirteen years since Allegiant wrapped up the original written trilogy. So why two new books? And why now? Part of me wonders if it has anything to do with Suzanne Collins.
Collins recently wrote and published two additional books expanding The Hunger Games franchise: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2020) and Sunrise on the Reaping (2025). The prequels take place during the 10th Annual Hunger Games and the Second Quarter Quell (Haymitch Abernathy’s games), respectively. Lionsgate quickly adapted both prequels for the big screen, with Sunrise on the Reaping coming to theaters in November 2026. The two additions were wildly successful.

Whether or not Roth is simply reheating Collins’ nachos, her announcement has certainly incited chatter within the dystopian reader fandom. The Sixth Faction comes out on October 6, 2026.
