Almost one calendar year ago, seemingly out of nowhere, the Fifteenth Doctor as assayed by Ncuti Gatwa regenerated into Billie Piper. An absolute “what in the actual eff?!” situation if ever there was one in the historic annals of Doctor Who. The Doctor regenerating is always cause for fervor, but without warning and into an actor who famously played not-the-Doctor made headlines and head-scratching the world over. At the time, we weren’t sure when, or even if, that cliffhanger would resolve. Then we learned it would be Christmas 2026. Now, according to a report (from The Sun, so grain of salt), the special has been delayed and will instead end up at Easter 2027.

The Radio Times shared the supposed move, while noting the BBC has not replied for comment. The possible reason for delaying the special might end up being budgetary. During Gatwa’s brief tenure on Doctor Who, the BBC entered a coproduction agreement with Disney+ which brought lots more money to the production. Now, with that partnership ended, the already cash-strapped BBC has to foot the bill for the whole thing. That doesn’t mean they can’t do it. However, it’s possible writer-producer Russell T Davies’ ambitions for the one-off are more grandiose. It could also just be down to time and scheduling.
It might also be, as The Sun suggests, the BBC, et al, are finding it difficult to cast the would-be net full time Doctor.
In December of last year, Davies told Radio Times that while he hadn’t yet begun work on the script, he told BBC bosses his ideas and they responded “with jaws agape, loving it.” Perhaps in the months since, the script proved too lofty to get a finished product out for Christmas. Look, man, I don’t know.
Doctor Who has never gone a full calendar year without a new episode since the show returned in 2005. If these reports prove true, 2026 will be that selfsame full calendar year. We did, thankfully, get some returned missing episodes, so that has tided many of us over. Still, whether or not the special airs this Christmas or next Easter, the idea that a single special will answer all the questions we have—like why and how the Doctor turned, seemingly, into Rose Tyler—might be more than we can hope for. Time(lord) will tell.
