There are some sports that are staples in the Summer and Winter Olympics, like Track & Field, Swimming, and Figure Skating. Every few years, millions of people tune in to watch some of the most physically talented people on Earth compete for the coveted gold medal. In recent years, there have been new additions that haven’t gone over so well, like the breakdancing fiasco. Now, a Ninja Warrior obstacle race is coming to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Many folks in the USA are familiar with American Ninja Warrior. The competitive series came to rise in the late 2000s and featured obstacle courses that competitors would try to complete. They all require a great deal of timing, agility, determination, and speed to come out on top with the best time. That show actually originated from Sasuke, a Japanese competition reality series, and the production company behind it, Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, inked the deal with Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne to bring this Ninja Warrior obstacle racing event into the new Modern Pentathlon. It is apparently replacing equestrian show jumping.
We’d assume that previous winners of the various series could have a shot at becoming Olympians. But who knows how this will work.
“What an incredible honor it is for our Federation to be working closely with TBS, the broadcaster that gave ‘Ninja Warrior’ to the world,” said UIPM prexy Rob Stull in a statement. “It is 30 years since TBS turned obstacle racing into a television phenomenon with the original ‘Sasuke,’ so our two organizations are a great fit in terms of heritage and innovation. Modern Pentathlon has held a continuous place in the Olympic Games since 1912, constantly evolving over the decades to satisfy the viewing preferences of sports fans around the world. Ahead of LA28, this agreement represents a wonderful and unique coming together of primetime entertainment and Olympic sports culture.”
This is going to make for quite the interesting Olympics watch in 2028.
