Ever since James Gunn announced plans for his new DCU, fans have been wondering where and when Batman will show up. And three years later, we are still waiting for that Bat signal to light up the sky. And aside from an off-in-the-distance cameo in the HBO animated series Creature Commandos, we’ve seen no signs of the Dark Knight anywhere. But we might have a confirmation at last of at least some Bat-family characters. And it’s arrived in the most unlikely place: HBO’s Lanterns. The person possibly tied to the Batman cast of characters isn’t a Green Lantern. We think it’s Rushville’s flustered Sheriff Kerry Kane, played by Kelly Macdonald.
In episode two of Lanterns, Sheriff Kane revealed to Hal Jordan that she was originally not a small-town girl from Rushville, Nebraska. She told Hal that she actually originally came from Gotham City, and moved to Rushville “on a whim.” In one scene, we see her calling what we presume is another police department out of town for information. And if Sheriff Kane has a history in Gotham City, could she be talking to her contacts at the GCPD? Maybe even a certain Commissioner James Gordon? And could the “Barb” she mentions actually be his daughter, Barbara Gordon, a.k.a. Batgirl/Oracle? We think it’s at least possible.
But that’s not the only way that Kerry Kane could connect to the world of Batman. Because her very surname is a clue. It’s quite possible that Kerry could be part of Gotham’s Kane family, and therefore related to Bruce Wayne’s mother, Martha. Her maiden name was actually Martha Kane. The Kane side of the family also has their own hero who protects the city, Kate Kane, who we know as Batwoman. Yes, that makes Batwoman Bruce Wayne’s cousin. But it would also make the Lanterns character of Kerry Kane related to Batman as well. Now, it’s quite possible (maybe even likely) that Kerry Kane’s surname is a tribute to Green Lantern’s co-creator, Gil Kane. But then again, it could also be both things.
We probably won’t get any kind of confirmation from James Gunn as to who she was talking to on the phone either way. Until a proper DCU Batman arrives on the screen, we also probably won’t know how long he’s been around in Gotham City. But we know that he’s been around longer than Superman, who has only been a superhero for about three years. But based on his very brief cameo in Creature Commandos, we think Batman has been fighting crime in Gotham City for at least a decade.
A decade is certainly enough time for Batman to have gathered a family of crime fighters of sorts. Early synopsis for Batman: Brave and the Bold suggested it would be a Bat-family adventure. And that could possibly include Batgirl and Batwoman. (And hopefully, Nightwing). It may be years before we know for sure, but the possibilities are sure fun to ponder for fans of the DC Universe.
