It’s Fast: Qualcomm’s New Oryon CPU Hits 5GHz Tim | usagoldmines.com

Qualcomm announced this week that it has achieved a 5GHz clock speed with the new Oryon CPU, a first for a mobile processor. That sounds like an impressive number, being someone who remembers overclocking my OG DROID to over 1GHz. They were wild times.

What does this mean for us in 2026, though? Qualcomm details that with its new CPU, “Apps open the instant you tap them, web experiences are responsive, and demanding workloads like gaming and content creation keep up with the user. It also matters for agentic AI, where the CPU orchestrates the work behind every request.

To achieve this speed, Qualcomm is using a new cache architecture called FlexCache, which allows, and this is their words, “heterogeneous cores to access the same dynamically allocated cache pool, helping large working sets stay resident instead of spilling to memory.”

Qualcomm doesn’t specify when we will have these speeds available on our Android phones, but it seems like a very safe bet that Samsung’s upcoming line of Galaxy S27 devices would be a good start here in the US.

If reading about this stuff is your jam, you’d appreciate Qualcomm’s blog post on the subject. As for me, I just want a responsive phone.
