Back in June, we saw a wider rollout of the new Chat Themes option in Google Messages and sort of assumed it would land for everyone in the days that followed. We’re now in the final days of August and the feature has arrived and stayed, disappeared, and in some cases, showed back up again for some users, including us. We aren’t sure why Google is holding this back, but wanted to share that you are not alone if you don’t have the feature yet.
In recent weeks, I’ve danced between 5 or 6 phones and have seen Chat Themes there are some and not on others. I believe I had the option going into my Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra testing, but it then disappeared once I first switched to the Pixel 11 Pro and 11 Pro XL. However, over the weekend, it popped back up on a fresh Pixel 11 Pro and has remained since.
Google Messages Chat Themes
For those catching up, Google started to introduce a highly-requested Chat Themes feature to Google Messages as it became the official replacement for Samsung Messages in early July. This was part of Google’s attempt to introduce a comparable feature set to Samsung Messages once users were forced to adopt Google Messages.
Chat Themes allow you to set custom colors for individual chats or group messages, but the bigger feature is the option to set a wallpaper. This wallpaper can be one of several pre-loaded options, plus you can choose your own wallpaper to make it truly custom.
For most users, getting Chat Themes has required you to enroll in the Google Messages beta program. However, this is really a device-by-device or account-by-account rollout, so that won’t even guarantee that you’ll get it. It certainly helps, assuming you want access.
How to setup Chat Themes in Google Messages
- To get started, enroll in the Google Messages beta program (here).
- Once enrolled, you’ll head into Google Play and check for an update to the beta.
- Once updated, open Google Messages and then open a message thread/conversation.
- Tap the 3-dot menu in the top right corner and look for “Chat theme.”
- If it’s not there, you’ll need to close the app completely and re-open it.
- Swipe up and hold to open the app switcher, then swipe the app away
- Once re-opened check again for the “Chat theme” option in a thread’s menu
- If there, tap it and then you’ll be inside Chat Theme area where you can choose color, pre-selected images, or “Choose a photo” of your own.
- Pick an image and then “Apply” to set it.
