Georgia-Based Bank Customers Targeted by Fake Fraud Prevention Text Messages Daily Hodl Staff | usagoldmines.com

BankSouth is warning customers about fake text messages impersonating the bank’s fraud prevention department.

The US bank says that the text messages claim an unrecognized device like an iPad requires a remote termination and include fake case numbers and temporary passwords.

Several customers report receiving the text messages that are designed to appear “highly official” and prompt immediate actions that could compromise accounts.

The scammers seek to trick the customers into handing out their actual account information or login credentials, a common phishing scam.

BankSouth says the messages are not from the financial institution and advise customers to ignore them and contact the bank directly.

The phishing scam targets mobile users with seemingly urgent banking alerts. Victims risk account access if they respond or click links.

The bank is actively monitoring and alerting the public to prevent data or fund losses. Official communications from the bank do not use such tactics. Customers should verify any unexpected texts by logging into their account or calling known numbers.

The bank says that to avoid being scammed never reply to the text, click links or call the number provided in the message. The bank also says it will never ask for customers’ password, PIN or online banking credentials or security codes.

BankSouth, a community bank founded in Georgia, has $1.6 billion in assets under management.
