Google Maps users in the U.S. will now see the name “Lake America” instead of “Lake Ontario” for the Great Lake that straddles the New York—Ontario border.
Google said it made this change in response to the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) updating the name for “Lake Ontario” to “Lake America,” following an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump last week.
Google Maps users in Canada will still see the “Lake Ontario” name only, while users outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names.
- In the U.S.: Lake America
- In Canada: Lake Ontario
- Outside of the U.S. and Canada: Lake Ontario (Lake America)
Apple Maps has yet to be updated, so it still shows the “Lake Ontario” name worldwide. When the GNIS updated the name for “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” last year, Apple Maps began rolling out the change one day after Google Maps, so it might not be long before Apple follows suit with this “Lake America” change.
