“Somehow, Palpatine returned.” That lazy non-explanation from Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron from The Rise of Skywalker on how the Emperor came back to life has become an iconic meme these past six years. It’s a great internet shorthand to just express the feeling of “Hey man, I dunno.” While a guest on The Happy Sad Confused podcast, Josh Horowitz asked Isaac about the legacy of that bit of dialogue, and how it has become iconic in its own right. Although, perhaps for the wrong reasons. Oscar Issac also revealed the following about the origin of his now-meme-worthy line delivery:
That was a new addition right at the end… hey man, I committed to the exasperation that’s for sure.
Isaac said they added in this extra bit of dialogue during the film’s extensive reshoots. Yes, this means that earlier versions had even less explanation for how the Emperor returned after Return of the Jedi. How’d that guy come back from Vader throwing him down a giant shaft? Certainly, the opening crawl for The Rise of Skywalker merely announced that Palpatine was back, without giving us much of an explanation as to how.
We’re going to be fair to J.J. Abrams and Episode IX writer Chris Terrio here. The excellent moment in The Last Jedi where Kylo kills Snoke left them without a “Big Bad” for the finale. And since Snoke was believed to be connected to Palpatine since The Force Awakens, it made sense. The Emperor having a clone contingency plan for his eventual death was straight out of the beloved comic book Dark Empire. But we needed more than just guessing from the Resistance as to how it all happened. That’s the part that is forever baffling. But at least we got a legendary meme of Oscar Isaac that will live forever on the internet. That’s got to count for something, right?
