What movie do you most wish you could watch again for the very first time? That old question might not be a hypothetical one much longer if a French film company’s experiment works. Pathé is hiring a hypnotherapist to try and “erase” the memory of an entire film from someone’s mind so they can see it again for the first time.
Pathé Rewind is an endeavor to test “whether hypnosis can surprise you all over again with a film you know inside out.” And it’s exactly what it sounds like. The project (which we first learned about at IGN) will see if hypnotist Victor Kraemer can use hypnosis to essentially erase participants’ memories of certain movies, which they will then watch again. All 30 selected volunteers will get a personal online session with Kraemer. Then, on November 9 at Pathé Buitenhof in The Hague, they will go and find out if their recollection has been temporarily wiped away by hypnotic suggestion. Kraemer will also perform more hypnosis techniques on that same day.
Nerdist’s Take: Why Is the Most Obvious Movie Not Included in This Experiment?
This is a fun, low stakes experiment….and we still have a major complaint. The 30 registrants chosen will get to pick one of four films to watch: The Matrix, Se7en, La La Land, and Interstellar. No shade at La La Land, but we don’t know what the hell it’s doing here. That’s not our issue, though. Our issue is how in the hell is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind NOT included? That’s….I mean….it’s the whole thing! Erasing someone’s mind so they forget….
You know what? Forget it. But not literally because we’re not undergoing hypnosis over its omission. We would, however, undergo hypnosis to be part of this experiment. And if Pathé Rewind works, it could be something they then replay for others. Why wouldn’t we want it to work? Some movies work best the first time you see them.
