A smile is something special, a surprise Halloween episode from a TV show is something rare. That’s what we got with IT: Welcome to Derry – A Story of Derry. This 30 minute episode took us far back into Derry’s past with the area’s indigenous people, and tied into what we saw in the show’s first season. As we all recall, there was a vision sequence in episode four about the origins of IT, who was known to the people as the Kallu (also called Galloo). Now, we get more information about what happened in and near those woods.
Three young people, led by Necani, decide to ignore warnings about the forbidden Western Wood and go to find food. They encounter IT, who takes on the scariest villain of their time: a white settler. From there, things get wild, including some sacrifices and cannibalism.
It all ties back together with expanding on some scenes we’ve seen before of Necani’s mom and a group going into the woods to find the kids. The moral of the story is that kids don’t listen and that can lead to death. But, there was also discovery in this journey that helped to protect future residents of the area.
The Welcome to Derry Halloween special also does a big thing and introduces us to a live-action Maturin, the cosmic turtle who is an enemy of IT. The tribe communes with the turtle using a root powder in order to protect their village. That’s how they got the idea for how to cage the Galloo. Maybe we will see Maturin again in some form in season two as a new group fights against Pennywise. Rose and other indigenous people will likely appear, so it is not impossible. All in all, it is a great expansion to the story from season one.
